Couch Lawn Review
Couch Grass

Characteristics of Couch Grass

Couch Grass is by far one of the most popular lawns used in Australia, and has so been for a long time. Couch lawns are indeed an old favourite for both Australian homes, and recreation areas. In times gone past there were very little differences with Couch grass, and most lawns made up of this turf variety were of the ‘common’ couch type. However like almost every other lawn grass, extensive breeding has improved this lawn type considerably in the past decades. The quality of Couch grass has improved considerably over this same time to now give better colour, better drought tolerance, and better softness in these new variants.

Known for its fine leaf, bright to dark green colour, its love and tolerance of full sun conditions, excellent wear and tear and repair capabilities, drought tolerance, and its ability to establish almost anywhere and thrive, its easy to see the appeal which Couch has enjoyed over so many decades.

Other Characteristics of Couch Grass

Couch is a grass which loves full sun conditions, and will thrive and stay alive in hot conditions also, however Couch grass does not like shade. The shade tolerance of this lawn type is about 10%, which is about the same as Kikuyu, with Zoysia shade tolerance at about 40%, and Buffalo shade tolerance at 70% - for comparison.

Most couch lawns will continue to look good, with the lawn’s appearance improving as we put more work and lawn care into its maintenance. Yes, we can create a stunning showpiece lawn with Couch.

Also, it is equally as easy that a Couch lawn can become straggly, with bare patches and looking very poor. Which will happen when the lawn is not receiving enough water or nutrients (fertiliser), or is growing in shade which is too heavy for the lawn to tolerate.

Couch is also an invasive grass. It will require garden edging to ensure that it doesn’t begin to grow into and overtake our garden beds. Which is easily done at our regular garden maintenance by pulling out any runners which have crept into the garden. It’s when we do not do this regular maintenance that we can begin to find couch that may have grown excessively into our shrubs and bushes.

Couch lawns will require average lawn mowing, more often for the healthiest lawns, and less often for less healthy lawns. Thatch buildup should be properly removed when necessary by de-thatching, which is also known as vertimowing. Mow with a cylinder mower for a brilliant flat finish, or with a rotary mower.

Lawn Care Facts
Lawn Fact:
Frequent shallow watering promotes a shallow root system that struggles for life under heat stress. A lawn constantly under stress will send out masses of seed heads, be weak and easily damaged, be slow to repair, and be far more susceptible to diseases and weeds.
